Dr Rachel Westcott

Dr Rachel Westcott is a veterinarian in her own private practice in Adelaide’s south. She graduated from Murdoch University in 1999 with first class honours, and is now a PhD candidate with Western Sydney University and the Bushfire & Natural Hazards CRC. In 2009, Rachel founded SAVEM – South Australian Veterinary Emergency Management – a 100% volunteer organisation of vets, vet nurses and wildlife carers, which is now part of the South Australian State Emergency Management Plan, working under Primary Industries and Regions SA. A former police officer and diagnostic radiographer, Rachel has led SAVEM in multiple bushfire activations. Her PhD research site is the picturesque and animal-diverse southern Eyre Peninsula: her research topic is about the interactions between animal owners and Emergency responders in bushfire
