Dr Ian Smith

Ian Smith is the senior veterinarian at Zoos SA based at Adelaide Zoo for the last five years, and at Monarto Zoo for the seven year before that. He has also worked at Werribee Zoo and at the zoos of the London Zoological Society. He is the proprietor of “ZooVet” which provides clinical and training support to the wildlife sector. He also holds adjunct positions at the Adelaide and Melbourne vet schools and sits on the Wildlife Ethics Committee of South Australia in a category A, and sometimes chair, capacity. He is a Melbourne BVSc graduate and has gained his Masters in Wild Animal Health at the Royal Vet College (London) and memberships in Medicine of Australasian Wildlife Species from the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. He has completed wildlife capture courses in Africa and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study “Veterinary practice, facilities and protocols in open-range zoos” across seven countries. He has participated and supported numerous field conservations projects, has published or co-published a dozen scientific papers and similar amount of presentations to lay and scientific audiences. He professes not to have a favourite animal, lest it upsets the zoo keepers, but recreationally he enjoys sea bird colonies
